| Drive Removal Instructions
 |
Laptops:
Many laptop hard drives can be removed by releasing a screw, or clip,
and then sliding the drive out.
On other models removal of the hard drive may require that case
be opened. If this is the case, we recommend that you send the
entire machine, including power cables. We will take the
responsibility for removing the drive, and putting it back after repairs,
if this is what you need.
Desktop Machines:
The hard drive is the size of a paper-back book. It is a, usually
silver but sometimes black, piece of equipment. It is generally
mounted with a few screws, and is *attached to a gray ribbon cable, and a
power cable.
If you are comfortable with opening your machine, you should be able to
remove it with no problems. Otherwise, get some more expert
help, or call us and we will be glad to try to walk you through.
Servers:
If you know where the drive(s) are located in the machine, you may be
able to remove them without any tools. They will be held by
some simple latching system. You may want to consult with the
manufacturer, or call us and perhaps we can help. |
| Packing
Instructions

|
Once you drive is removed from your computer, you should
pack it tightly in a strong box. It should not be able to
shift in the box at all. Once the box is filled, you should be
able to shake it, and not hear or feel any movement.
Use the drives original packing box and supports, if you have them.
Otherwise, we recommend that you use tightly crumpled paper or bubble wrap, available at Staples, or other
office supply store. The big bubbles are best, but just be
sure that you have at least 1 inch of padding on all sides of the drive.
However, if you use bubble wrap or packing peanuts, ship the drive
immediately, because the effectiveness of these packing materials only
lasts for a few days.
Also, it is a good idea to enclose your drive in an anti-static bag.
These are usually silvery plastic. If you don't have one a tight
wrap with foil or plastic can help. However, if you don't have
access to any anti-static materials, send it anyway, but mark MAGNETIC
MEDIA on the side o f the shipping box.
Mark the package as fragile and ship it via Fedex, or some other
express carrier. Call or email us for
specific shipping details. |
