Insurance Reimbursements:
HO-4 type
The most common logic
for business is damaged not caused by an Act of God, which impacted the business financially.
In essence, a failing hard drive, is like a thief who steals your
laptop. Of course you may feel that it was within your
power, in a perfect world, to have avoided the theft....but we do not live
in a perfect world.
Most home or
facility insurance (HO-4 or HO-6 type contracts), will cover;
- Fire
or lightning
- Theft
- Trauma
- Electrical
surge damage
If we examine your hard drive(s), and
determined that a likely cause of the damage is lighting, or other
electrical surge related.
This is a common cause
of hard drive damage especially to computers, which are connected to both
power and communications networks during a storm.
This is because your computer can become
the nexus between the local hardware, of these two or more separate
connections to dynamically grounded sources.
Fortunately this type of damage is often
covered by your business, or home insurance policy. However, it may also
mean that the other components of your computer and communications
equipment, may have been destroyed, or at the very least damaged. This
damage will most likely significantly shorten the useful life of this
equipment. Also note, that if you had some surge protection in place, that
protection is likely damaged, in effective, or non-operational and should
be changed immediately.
Another
possibility is that the equipment has been subjected to some trauma.
The trauma coverage may also be affected by other considerations
like inside of a vehicle, air travel, etc.
Malicious damage is also commonly covered.
One final consideration is that we are
unable to say that this damage was caused by a single event; it may have
been building for some time. Finally, your insurance company may want to
examine the drive for themselves, if that is the case let us know, and we
will return the drive after your recovery is complete.
